Aeron Valley Railway Society

THE society met on Wednesday, 21 November, in the Royal British Legion Hall.

The society was fortunate to be able to book Peter Lund, a director and former chairman of the Llangollen Railway, who came down from north Wales to give members an illustrated talk on the history of this delightful preserved railway.

He spoke of its past career as a part of the railway system up to closure and its resurrection from humble beginnings as a preserved railway up to the present times.

The railway is achieving its goal of reaching Corwen and it is also a major centre of engineering for the repair and rebuilding of historic locomotives and rolling stock.

Some of its activities featured recently in a TV programme about coaches, presented by Peter Snow.

The members enjoyed a very entertaining evening and it was agreed that a trip to Llangollen would be planned for next year.

The next meeting will be a Christmas meal at the Monachty, but the society has a varied programme of meetings planned well into 2019, beginning on 16 January.

Carols evening

THE annual Christmas carols evening will be held at the Memorial Hall on Wednesday, 12 December, at 7.30pm.

The festive singing will be accompanied by Aberystwyth Brass Ensemble.

There will also be readings, stories and musical items, as well as the opportunity to win festive goods.

A licensed bar will also be open, and mulled wine and mince pies will be served.

At 6.45pm on the same evening, a Christmas fair will be held at the hall, run by the Friends of the Hall.
