WI

THE group met at the British Legion Hall for their new year meeting.

President Eleanor Evans welcomed everyone and then all the business matters were discussed, including the newsletter.

The Olive Rees Memorial Cup was presented to Ann Jackson and Jackie Swetman for 2018.

The group had talks from a number of members, giving details of events they had taken part in.

First Cathy Wood told members how she had attended the Not in My Name meeting in Aberystwyth in December, and gave details of how all the speakers had called for intolerance of violence towards women everywhere.

Then, the members who had been to Denman College gave details of how much they had enjoyed their visits.

Carole Lovell showed the group items of silver jewellery she had made and the method of making them.

Jackie Swetman had also made some beautiful items of silver necklaces and read her entry to the diary competition.

Liz Owen described their visit to Oxford, walking great distances around the colleges, culminating in sung Evensong in one of the college chapels.

Jacqui Thomas had visited Blenheim Palace, and also read her own diary entry for the competition.

Eleanor thanked them all, commenting on how the group’s own members had spoken as well as speakers from outside the area.

Refreshments were enjoyed and the raffle was won by Anne Evans.

The competition, entitled ‘What my WI means to me’, was won by Denise Hicks, with Jackie Swetman coming second.

The next meeting will be on 6 February when Pat Hoare will give a talk about the work of the Samaritans.
