Round Table

LAST week the Aberaeron Round Table took a coach full of OAPs to Swansea to see the pantomime Peter Pan.

Chocolates and sweets were brought around by the members of the Round Table.

The coach picked them up and arrived in Swansea in time for shopping and lunch.

They met at the theatre where several members took them to their seats.

On the way home they were taken for supper to Tafarn Ffostrasol Arms which all enjoyed.

Cinema

THE memorial hall will be hosting its next cinema night on Friday, 7 February, at 7.30pm showing the film Green Book – a comedy drama inspired by true friendship in 1960s America.

Please refer to the hall website for further details.

All are welcome.

Later on in the month, on Saturday, 15 February, there is a one-off event at the hall at 1.30pm, showing the PG film Song of the Sea as well as an animation workshop, organised by WOW Film Festival.

WI

PRESIDENT Eleanor Evans was unable to attend this month’s meeting so vice-president Rosemary Lewis stepped in to take the meeting as well as acting as assistant minutes secretary.

Sadly, one of Rosemary’s first announcements was to say that Neris Lloyd’s husband Geraint died on Christmas Eve and their condolences go out to Neris and her family.

After going through the matters arising and correspondence, Rosemary asked several members to read out the WI resolutions Chris Williams: stem cell donor registration, Rosemary Lewis: female crash test dummies, Linda Hughes: ending modern slavery, Liz Owen: talk about death and dying and Carole Lovell: protect our precious helium.

The speaker for the evening was Elizabeth Evans in her role as chair of the Ceredigion Community Health Council.

Elizabeth was asked to judge the competition of a favourite natural remedy.

Iris Jones was the winner, Chris Williams was second and Denise Hicks won the raffle.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, 5 February, at 7pm in the British Legion Hall.

Aeron Valley Railway Society

THE January meeting of the society was held at the usual venue of the British Legion Hall on Wednesday, 15 January.

There was general agreement that the Christmas meal at the Monachty had been very successful and enjoyable.

The numbers were down somewhat as a result of seasonal ailments, but a reasonable number of members attended for an evening of presentations of films, slides and video material which turned out to be of great variety and interest.

There was vintage footage of pre-war activity on the LMS, some previously unseen pictures of the Aberystwyth-Carmarthen line shortly before its closure, a pot-pourri of preserved lines, both standard and narrow gauge and a goodly number of pictures of late steam and early diesel and electric action on BR, together with coverage of trams in preservation.

The February meeting will be a little different, being a discussion forum and question and answer session about building models both of locos and rolling stock.

It will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 19 February in the Royal British Legion Hall.

As always, visitors and prospective new members will be welcome.

There were small slams on four separate boards. Three were bid and made by Dai and Ron and two by Keith and Gill. One unlucky pair had three slams bid against them.

It has been decided to cancel the new year party planned for 23 January and to hold an Easter party in April.
