Quiz Night

ONCE again, the Aberaeron Memorial Hall fundraising quiz night proved to be a huge success with many teams competing in a fun-filled evening and once again proving that everybody knows the answer once it was given by the quizmaster.

Thanks to the organisers Robert Thomas and Rhodri and Ffion Jones for their considerable hard work in providing another marvellous quiz.

The eventual winners were the Curly Wurly Team (pictured above).

The doors and bar open at 7pm.

Please ensure that you book your seats by Monday, 13 November, so you don’t miss this excellent lecture. Further details are available from the hall office.

WI

THE AGM was held at the British Legion Hall, where 33 members met to end their year and elect officers for the year 2017-18.

The president welcomed everyone including WI tellers Aeronwy Williams and Mair Jenkins from Dihewyd WI, and Ann Jones, the vice-chair of National Federation of WI.

A ballot was held for next year’s committee members, and all the Business matters were discussed.

This included the Christmas lunch, the annual Carol Concert, and Candlelit Vigil in Aberystwyth for the Women’s Refuge.

Judy Southgate requested that as a branch they contact the MP, to ask that more research be done to lessen the impact of Microplastic Pollution of our Oceans, and the speaker, Ann Jones gave some tips that we all could do to help this pollution which is becoming a major worldwide problem.

Congratulations were given to all members who had done well in the recent Winter Rally.

Treasurer Linda Badham gave the Financial Statement, which was adopted.

The Committee Annual Report was given by Carol Grinszpan, and Neris Lloyd gave her Annual Report, and both were adopted.

The result of the ballot for committee members was given, and a ballot for president resulted in an overwhelming vote for Neris Lloyd to be president again for the coming year.

Neris introduced Ann Jones as the speaker.

She gave an interesting talk, and told that she still has her roots in her own WI branch in Llanddewi Brefi, while her work as vice-chair of NFWI has taken her away to many other parts of the UK.

She said that the WI has great power to raise awareness of national concerns, including loneliness as well as plastic soup in oceans.

Jacqui Thomas gave the vote of thanks to Ann Jones for her inspiring and interesting talk, and Liz Owens gave the vote of thanks to the president and the committee for their hard work over the past year.

Refreshments of cheese and biscuits with our tea or coffee were served and the raffle was won by Sheila Evans.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, 6 December, and will be a members’ evening with a Snowman Drive, in the British Legion Hall.

On the basis of the best six out of ten results, the well-deserved winners of the Barclays Cup are Dylan Raw-Rees and Dai Hayes, who were first on three of the rounds, and second in three other rounds.

Keith and Gill – who would have won on a running total basis - were second, Valerie and Virginia third and Nigel and Herbie fourth.

Congratulations to all who took part in what turned out to be a tensely fought competition.
