THE latest community news from Lampeter

Ramblers

THE traditional Welsh custom of welcoming in the Old New Year on or around 13 January, is still practised in the Gwaun Valley near Fishguard and also nearby in Llandysul.

Worshippers at Lampeter’s branch of the Orthodox Church will also be observing the date, which is based on the centuries old Julian Calender, along with communities in Wales where the Mari Lwyd will undoubtedly make an appearance.

Lampeter Ramblers will be visiting Cwm Gwaun to join the celebrations with a leisurely ramble, finishing off with a visit to the Dyffryn Arms, fondly known as Bessie’s.

Bessie’s is an old-world pub and has been run by Bessie Davies’ family since 1845. A special welcome is given on Dydd Hen Galan.

The walk will be on Tuesday, 14 January and everybody is welcome. Call James Williams on 01570 480041 for more information.

The last walk of 2019 on Saturday, 28 December, started from the college grounds, and followed a favourite local route, perfect for short winter days, around the Falcondale estate.

The first walk of 2020 was at Llanddewi Brefi, with a short walk to Pentre-rhew, Mountain Gate and Llwyn with a few opting for a stroll up the Llanfair mountain road to enjoy the sweeping views over the Teifi Valley.
