On Sunday, 6 September, Meirionnydd Ramblers will walk on the north side of the Mawddach Estuary, exploring the hills above Caerdeon.

The mansion there, Plas Caerdeon, which you will see in the early stages of the walk, is famous for an 1869 visit by Charles Darwin. Today it is an outdoor education centre. Starting from the parking area at Farchynys, the ramblers’ route takes them on paths and tracks through forestry and open moorland to the end of the lane above Bontddu. Here, turn to pick up an old drover’s track before descending on the other side of the valley and returning to the start.

This is a Group grade C+, circular, 7 mile, National Grade: Moderate walk.

Start at 10am. Estimated finish time, 3.30pm.

Meet at Farchynys car park, west of Bontddu (Grid Ref: SH661186, What3Words: ///leaned.raft.curls.

The start time is when the walk commences. Please arrive earlier to ensure you are ready for the start.

On Thursday, 10 September, Meirionnydd Ramblers will take on Foel-fras and Moel Penamnen.

Sometimes the best mountain views are to be had not from the highest peaks but from more modest hills somewhat remote from their towering neighbours. One such example is Moel Penamnen, whose top only just exceeds 600 metres. If the weather is clear the panorama includes virtually every range in Eryri.

After an initial walk through the attractive and historically interesting Cwm Penamnen, take a path heading steeply up through partially felled forest at the head of the valley. Emerging from the forestry, the route continues over grassy moorland, with just a short pull up via Foel-fras to the summit of Moel Penamnen.

An airy walk along a broad ridge brings walkers gently down to the top edge of felled forestry where you turn away to the NE to follow easy paths through fields and woods back to the start.

Expect to encounter some stretches of marshy ground unless conditions have been especially dry.

This is a Group grade B, circular, 9 mile, National Grade: Moderate walk with an ascent of 1969 feet.

Please contact the leader if you would like to join.

Start time 10am. Estimated finish time, 4.30pm.

Start at the roadside parking on the approach to Dolwyddelan station (Grid Ref: SH736522 / postcode: LL25 0SX, What3Words: ///arrival.shrub.unlisted). Once again, the start time is when the walk commences. Please arrive earlier to ensure you are ready for the start.
