A GROUP of Machynlleth councillors have agreed to work with residents who want to take over a patch of wasteland and turn it into allotments.

It was reported in the Cambrian News that residents of David Williams Court had asked the town council if they can take over a patch of land on the Plas grounds which backs onto their houses and which has been blighted by fly-tipping and littering.

While councillors remained supportive of the idea at a meeting of the town council last week, town clerk Rab Jones reiterated his previous warnings against “creating a precedent”, whereby some residents are able to jump the queue of allotment allocation.

“It is something that would make that area in the car park vicinity look a lot better than it is,” Cllr Rhydian Mason told councillors.

“It is not looking as good as it should be really – let’s have a chat with them.

“There is something about the way they approached us to have a dialogue and do something in return with us as well.”

Cllr Sylvia Rowlands added: “I wholeheartedly support Cllr Mason, it would be a very nice to see an area of the park used by many people.”
