THE trial began yesterday (Tuesday) of two motorists charged with careless driving following the death of Ceredigion councillor Paul James.
Lowri Powell, 43, of Penrhyncoch and Christopher Jones, 40, of Devil’s Bridge, both deny causing death by careless driving.
Llanbadarn county councillor Paul James, 61, was cycling along the A487 between Comins Coch and Waunfawr on 11 April 2019, Swansea Crown Court heard yesterday (Tuesday).
Cllr James was training for a charity bike ride at the time.
The court heard how drivers heading west towards Aberystwyth were ‘dazzled’ by low sun as Cllr James was cycling uphill towards a bend in the road.
The court was told that Cllr James was hit by the passenger-side wing mirror of Powell’s Ford Galaxy, which led him to fall into the road, and he was then hit by Jones’ Vauxhall Vectra and dragged over 100 feet along the road.
The trial continues.
