A Llanrhystud man has been banned from driving for two years after being found with cocaine and other drugs in his system.

Dafydd Llyr Rees, 20, admitted driving with levels of cocaine, benzoylecgonine and delta-9-tetrahydrocannibol in his system, as well as having a defective tyre while driving in Aberystwyth on 24 June.

Prosecutor Rhian Jones said a taxi driver on Boulevard St Brieuc had been forced to swerve while driving through town at around 8.10am because Rees had been veering across the road.

The taxi driver phoned another driver who saw Rees parked outside Aberystwyth Police Station and saw Rees, of Glyn Eiddwen, 12 Heol Islwyn, dropping his keys when he got out of the car, and called the police.

A saliva test showed the presence of drugs, with a later blood test showing cocaine, benzoylecgonine, which is a metabolite of cocaine, and delta-9-tetrahydrocannibol, a component of cannabis.

Ms Jones said Rees was found to have 13 microgrammes of cocaine in a litre of blood. The specified limit is 10.

He was also more than 15 times the specified limit of benzoylecgonine with 755 microgrammes in a litre of blood. The specified limit is 50.

The level of delta-9-tetrahydrocannibol was 4.1 microgrammes in a litre of blood. The limit is two.

Ms Jones said an inspection of the vehicle also found that the front offside tyre was defective.

Defence solicitor Alison Mathias said Rees was “shocked” by the readings and hadn’t realised how long drugs would stay in his system after he had attended a party.

She said the incident was “very out of character” for Rees and said he was very apologetic for the “very bad decision”, saying that Rees had “learnt his lesson”.

Ms Mathias said a driving ban would make it difficult for him to continue a health management course he is studying as it relies on work placements.

Rees was made subject to a community order for 12 months with a requirement that he carries out 60 hours of unpaid work.

He was also banned from driving for two years and will pay costs totalling £170.
