TWO Aberystwyth primary schools will close permanently at the end of the academic year, with the chair of governors of one of the schools saying it is a time of “huge sadness”.

Ysgol Llangynfelyn, in Taliesin, and Llanbadarn Fawr’s Ysgol Cwmpadarn will close for the final time at the end of this term as part of the council’s move to shake up education in the Aberystwyth area.

The two schools are among seven schools that will close across Ceredigion, with five primary schools closing in the Llandysul area as part of the plans for a new 3 to 19 super-school in Llandysul. Those schools are Dyffryn Teifi, Coedybryn, Pontsian, Llandysul and Aberbanc.

But while there is optimism over the new school planned in Llandysul, the closures of Llangynfelyn and Cwmpadarn have been met with disappointment.

Tammi Dallaston, the chair of governors at Llangynfelyn, said: “It is with huge sadness that we approach the final few days of Ysgol Llangynfelyn, after the decision was made by Ceredigion County Council to close the school.

“After 140 years of the school being a hub of the local community, young children now face an even lengthier journey to schools that are outside their locality."
