An evening of music has been organised to remember three much-missed members of AberOpera.
The Gilbert and Sullivan night in memory of Roger Barlow, Huw Evans and Joanne Julier will bring back the music of the Savoy Operas to Aberystwyth.
Roger, Huw and Joanne were accomplished Savoyards (G and S performers), and the concert will feature many favourites, including Huw and Roger’s party piece (the only non-G and S item in the programme), Offenbach’s The Bold Gendarmes, very much in the G and S style.
“Jo Julier was a student member of the now sadly defunct Aber University G and S Society, along with one of the evening’s pianists, Catherine Clark, and its compère, Ioan Guile,” an AberOpera spokesperson said.
“She also directed and starred, along with Huw and several of the concert’s performers, in a range of G and S operas with Showtime Singers and was a stalwart member of the backstage crew of the Wardens’ annual pantomime for over 30 years.
“Readers may remember her 40 years, latterly as proprietrix, of Cerdd Ystwyth Music shop in Portland Street, an unmatched source of musical knowledge to customers and friends, from where musicians, both locally and across the globe, were able to source sheet music for eisteddfodau and music exams.
“Jo was a champion of local music and young musicians and would be delighted that the evening will feature instrumental interludes played by local student violaist Elenor Nicholas.
“There may even be other instrumentalists entertaining during the interval!
“A crew of sailors, comic policemen, sisters, cousins and aunts will be delighted to welcome you to Holy Trinity Church, Aberystwyth, on Friday, 20 November at 7pm, admission £10 on the door to celebrate the lives and musical contributions of Huw, Roger and Jo to our community.”
