There’s nothing like making music in a large group.

Band, choirs and orchestra, Aberystwyth offers them all, but is particularly spoilt for choice when it comes to choirs.

One of those choirs is Aberystwyth Choral Society, the area’s largest singing group. This choir focuses on presenting full-scale performances of wonderful music, supported by a professional symphony orchestra and world-class soloists, at the best of venues, Aberystwyth Arts Centre.

But it’s not just about big concerts. Huge enjoyment comes from the weekly rehearsals. These are not just about learning the music, they are friendly get-togethers where everyone feels welcome. Experienced singers find plenty to get their teeth into, while those who perhaps don’t read music or have not sung so much soon pick things up - communal impetus, someone called it!

Choral Soc is an ageless mix, with students singing alongside others who may have been with the choir most of their lives! Many big choirs, once a common part of community music, especially in Wales, have bitten the dust due to costs, so Aber Choral Soc is now the only choir hereabouts keeping the great tradition alive in all its full-scale glory.

Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 7pm-9pm at the Morlan Centre, just along from Medina. They start on 15 September but people can join in whenever they can.

Conductor David Russell Hulme, whose professional conducting across the world includes years as chorus master of Carl Rosa Opera, looks forward to working with the choir on two visionary masterpieces: Elgar’s ‘The Music Makers’ and David de Lloyd’s ‘Tu Draw i’ Llen.’

“There’s nothing like the big choir experience. Music engulfing you. It’s a unique thrill,” he says.

“I’m excited about rehearsals, working with new members as well many I know will be returning. Join us but beware, choirs are addictive!”
