A BRITHDIR family hoping to save enough money for their dream holiday will be the latest to take part in a social experiment aired on S4C.
Six families, six episodes, one common aim. Each family goes into the Ty Arian (Money House) in S4C’s entertaining and informative series to learn more about their spending habits in order to save money.
As part of a revealing and light-hearted social experiment over 48 hours, we watch as each family receives expert guidance to identify areas where they overspend and where they can save money. The cameras return later to find out what they’ve learned.
Esyllt Richards, her husband Ifan, and their 10 and 12 year-old daughters from Brithdir will be the fifth family to enter the house Thursday, 17 May, 8pm on S4C).
Ahead of the episode, Esyllt said: “It was me who saw the Facebook advert to apply. And the main reason for wanting to do it was our oldest daughter saying, ‘I want, I need, I must have’ – so I thought we’d go on the programme for her to see the value of money.
“As a family, the leisure activity we do occasionally is going to the cinema but it’s not just going to see a film – you have to have popcorn and then, as we go to Wrexham or Llandudno, there’s a KFC or McDonald’s too. So instead of making tea, we’ll get food there. It just gets more expensive than we think.
“My husband runs a lot of mountain races and instead of making a picnic, we tend to get a takeaway. And to keep the girls quiet, I like to buy them drinks and crisps. It’s not too bad, but it’s money we could otherwise save.”
Keeping a watchful eye over the Richards family will be presenters Dot Davies and Leah Hughes.
Very often, bad habits can make it difficult to save. Will getting rid of these habits make it easier for the family to reach their ultimate goal?
And most importantly, will they save enough money for their holiday to Euro Disney?
Esyllt added: “After being on the show, the holiday is within our reach.
“Ifan and I sat down and realised by putting money aside – we could save £4 per day – then hopefully by the summer, we’ll be able to go on our holiday.”
