A Lions Club member has hailed an Aberystwyth family after they knitted hundreds of items to donate to the charity.

Susan Baldwin and Brenda Davies, along with their father J Baldwin, have been praised by 2nd Vice District Governor of the 105W region, Benjamin Manluctao, after hundreds of blankets, cardigans and small hats for babies were presented to the Lion’s Club.

The items were donated to Ben, with some due to be taken out to the Philippines during one of Ben’s visits, and others donated to Glangwili Hospital after Bronglais Hospital staff said the items were not needed there.

Ben said: “It is not how much we give, but how much love and sacrifice we put into giving that matters. In adherence to this adage, Aberystwyth’s civic-minded sisters Susan Baldwin and Brenda Davies, joined and inspired by their father, have patiently crocheted several hundreds of baby’s blankets, cardigans and small caps to fit children from newborn to a couple of months old.

“The three members of the family were inspired into action by the talk I gave when I was invited by the senior citizens to make a presentation of the Poverty Alleviation Programme and works in northern Philippines. Some of these garments for children are also intended for the less fortunate children in the Philippines.

“Others were taken to the Baby’s Special Unit in Glangwili Hospital, after it was ascertained that there was no demand for such garments at the Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth.”
