CEREDIGION Cabinet members have been urged to rule out changing the times when the county’s car parks should be paid for to avoid affecting nearby residents.

The proposal to change the times that car parking fees would be applicable to between 11am and 10pm was one of a number of recommendations put forward by a council scrutiny committee.

While several of the recommendations were not opposed by officers, there were doubts raised over introducing a new weekly ticket, introducing charges at council offices in Aberaeron and introducing charges on streets in Aberaeron and Cardigan.

Officers backed a proposal that could see long-term tickets being paid by direct debit, but warned that an additional £10 administration fee would also have to be charged.

They also supported suggestions that Aberystwyth’s New Promenade and New Quay’s Rock Street car parks should return to seasonal charging and that caravans should be banned from the North Road car park in Aberystwyth and Rock Street in New Quay.

Members of the thriving communities scrutiny committee had urged council Cabinet members to be more proactive in terms of the county’s car parks to both improve parking for motorists, but also provide the cash-strapped council with more income.

That led to the recommendation that charging in car parks should not begin until 11am but should then run to 10pm as it would provide local residents the chance to carry out chores in the morning.

However, in a report to the council’s Cabinet, that was questioned by council officers.
