Madam,
Re: the letter from Peter Knight about the Polish gentleman who farmed near Llanrhystud, I remember him in the early 1960s.
I would have been about 18 at the time and my parents had started to keep the wine merchants and delicatessen store known as the Welsh Cellar in Pier Street, Aberystwyth.
The gentleman’s name was Colonel Szculc (pronounced Shool) and he lived and farmed with his ex-batman from the Air Force, whose name unfortunately I do not remember.
The colonel was a most imposing gentleman of impeccable manners and they kept a smallholding. He supplied us with local honey. They were of great assistance to my parents in supplying them with details of Polish produce which would be popular with the local, post-war population.
I especially remember my family being invited to the Christmas celebrations held by the Polish population in the locality, a wonderful event with traditional food and dancing all in national costume.
Yours etc,
Margaret Baker, Llangorwen, Clarach.
