A big breakfast at Aberystwyth Rugby Club has raised over £1,200 for Prostate Cymru.

The rugby club hosted the Ceredigion Friends of Prostate Cymru’s first major awareness and funding event last Saturday.

The event was attended by more than 70 people from around the town and further afield.

The event was one of many similar events being held around Wales during November to increase awareness of prostate cancer and raise vital funds for charity.

Speaking at the event, Russell Hughes-Pickering, who himself was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the age of 48, explained that “a simple check” allowed him to catch the cancer early and make a full recovery.

One in eight men in Wales will be affected at some time in their lives, and 2,500 men in Wales are diagnosed with the cancer each year.

Sadly 500 will die each year. That’s roughly 11 men every week or one every 15 hours or so.

Russell added: “There are no obvious symptoms and I urge men to get checked out, as it is curable if caught early by going to see a doctor."

For support they can also contact the Friends Group or by attending a Support Group meeting.

The next meeting will be held on 11 December at 7.30pm in the rugby club.
