A church organist from Llanrhystud has built a Lego cathedral “from scratch”.

Daniel Smith, 25, works at Llanrhystud Post Office and Morrisons in Aberystwyth, but was also a local organist prior to Covid-19.

Once lockdown hit, Daniel said he was “overwhelmed” and disorientated by the change in routine, and so decided to throw himself into a new project.

Daniel, who said the project made “lockdown much easier to handle”, began building the cathedral in June 2020 and finished in March 2021, while also continuing to work full time.

“I started building the Lego cathedral because I felt overwhelmed by the lockdown situation,” Daniel said.

“Pre-pandemic, I was a local organist but then suddenly all the churches I played for closed and the sudden loss of a routine was slight disorientating!

“I therefore turned to Lego for comfort, just to try and figure out a sense of purpose for myself.

“I settled on the idea of a cathedral as I wanted it to be a connection for me, as I’ve grown up around the church all my life.

I researched custom cathedral models on the internet and found that some people were building their own model from scratch.

“I felt enthusiastic about this idea as it meant I could have more creative freedom on the project.”

The cathedral includes a detailed Lego interior and stain glass windows.

He added: “The finished model is dedicated to St Phillip and Elizabeth and was built between June 2020 to March 2021. It is based on no particular building and was very much an improvised build.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the process as it made lockdown much easier to handle.”

While Daniel is unsure of where the cathedral will be kept now, it will stay in one piece: “I do intend to keep it as one piece, most certainly.

“Its too good to break it all up.”
