A STRAY dog who was rescued from drowning in Italy by an Aberporth lifeguard is now enjoying a new life in the village.
Tranto, a four-year-old malnourished Bracco Italiano hunting hound, was spotted by Aberporth couple Hedydd Llewelyn, 25, and Sam Trevor, 30, while they were travelling around southern Italy last year.
They found the dog surviving on the contents of rubbish bins at a secluded beach deep in the forest.
Hedydd said the dog looked underweight and dehydrated, and after scrambling down some steep rocks to reach the sea to try to get a drink, he fell in and was drowning.
Hedydd, who had been working as an RNLI lifeguard in south Ceredigion, jumped in and managed to carry the exhausted animal to safety.
Following an appeal, the couple managed to raise £1,000 to bring Tranto back to Wales and last week he finally arrived at his new home.
