A holiday park near Aberystwyth has applied for permission to install a solar panel farm.

Morfa Bychan Holiday Park in Llanfarian has asked Ceredigion County Council for permission to install a 330kW solar farm on land currently as a dog exercise area and sheep pasture.

Planning documents said that the proposed solar farm would supply green energy directly to the holiday park, “covering approximately 40 per cent of the park’s annual demand.

“The proposal would help Morfa Bychan reduce energy costs and reduce their environmental impact whilst contributing to the Welsh Government’s renewable energy targets and Ceredigion County Council’s objective to promote an environmentally friendly tourism sector.”

The cable for the solar farm at the holiday park – which has 229 holiday homes as well as 66 mobile home pitches and nine tent pitches – will travel along the outside of the caravan park through a pasture of grassland, documents added.

The planned solar farm will have a project lifespan of 25 to 30 years, and is “designed to be fully reversible at the end of the lifetime of the project,” documents said.

Documents added that the planned solar panel farm ‘has low visibility due to its topography within the wider landscape as the proposed site is located within a dip and is sheltered by hills.

“The proposed development will not cause any changes to the cultural landscape as it forms part of the existing caravan park,” documents said.

“Due to the size and location of the proposed development, it is anticipated to have minimal impact on the character of the area.”

The construction of the solar farm – with an area of 0.6 hectares and a height of around two metres - is expected to last two months if given the go-ahead.
