ELIN Jones AM has spoken of the “racist vitriol” she has encountered on the doorsteps of Ceredigion and how she has had to employ personal security measures.

Miss Jones decided to speak about her experiences in the wake of the murder of Jo Cox, MP for Batley and Spen, Yorkshire, last week.

On Facebook she said: “There were times during this year’s election campaign, when on doorsteps in villages in Ceredigion, I heard vile racist, anti-immigrant views.

“They shocked me, because I had never come across such views, in such numbers, in previous campaigns. I remember a row of four smart bungalows on one afternoon in a village in the Teifi valley, each one spouting racist vitriol at me and my fellow canvassers.

“Another beautiful morning in villages between Aberaeron and Tregaron, spoilt by ignorant, anti-immigrant views. How could anybody be so twisted as to believe that Bronglais was being saved in order for more refugees to come to Aberystwyth?”

Miss Jones told the Cambrian News: “Jo Cox’s killing has shocked us all.

“To be shot, stabbed and killed whilst out undertaking her usual constituency duties has been particularly chilling for those of us who are elected representatives."
