A COUNTY councillor says he did not see the point of an anti-Donald Trump protest on Cardigan bridge last week.

A group of protesters staged a vigil on the bridge while MPs debated a petition signed by over 1.8 million people in opposition to a state visit by the controversial US president.

Cllr Gethin James, of Aberporth, told the Cambrian News he did not understand the amount of opposition towards President Trump.

“I just don’t get it,” he said. “At the end of the day he’s the democratically elected president of the United States so I don’t see why people are protesting in this country about him.

“I’m afraid there’s been a lot of hysteria over an issue which really is the business of the citizens of the United States.”

However, Cllr James’ viewpoint contrasted sharply with that of Cardigan town mayor Cllr Clive Davies who said he found it “admirable” that townspeople held such strong opinions on the proposed State visit.

“I see that nearly two million signed a UK Gov petition online against while some 300,000 were for the visit,” he said.

“I feel that a trade visit would of been a better option, with the UK leaving the European Union and going it alone, trade agreements and relationships are going to be very important to us from 2020.”
