A SHAKE-UP of Ceredigion’s electoral wards would see the number of councillors reduced by four under proposals announced by the Boundary Commission.
The Local Democracy and Boundary Commission for Wales has proposed a reduction in Ceredigion’s electoral wards from 42 to 38 councillors in time for the 2022 local government elections in order to bring electorate numbers to a recommended level.
The commission will start its consultative Electoral Review Programme with Ceredigion County Council on Wednesday, 25 January, and it is not yet known which wards will be affected by the changes.
A previous review in 2010 proposed cutting the number of councillors from 42 to 37 and the number of wards from 40 to 33.
The proposals would have seen the loss of Llanwenog ward, which would have been merged with Lampeter, with the new ward represented by two councillors.
Capel Dewi would have also been lost and merged with Llandysul; the three Cardigan wards merged into one ward represented by two councillors; and Llanarth and Llandysiliogogo wards merged into one.
Llangeitho would have become part of an extended Tregaron ward with another councillor being lost from the current arrangements.
A Ceredigion County Council spokesperson said: “Representatives from the Local Democracy and Boundary Commission will be attending council on 25 January to outline its policy and practice, including the council size policy and timetable for the electoral review.
“Following this, the Local Democracy and Boundary Commission will commence the consultation period on its draft proposals.
“During this period, Ceredigion council will have an opportunity to submit its views to the commission.”
