Editor,
I am an ex practice nurse and am well aware of the need for exercise as one grows older. And I have been a user of the pool on a weekly basis for many, many years.
Here are some points to remember. Rehab after surgery is important, particularly after joint surgery and swimming is good for people with arthritis.
With children, learning to swim could save lives and combat obesity, as well as the fun enjoyed in the pool. With the safety aspect, there are also the benefits of learning life-saving, playing sport and taking part in competitions. It is a safe exercise for pregnant and nursing mothers and may be enjoyed by the whole family.
I know I’m so grateful to the teacher who taught me to swim (in her own time, I might add) and it’s been one of the joys of my life.
And if we have to drive to Cardigan, Lampeter or Aberystwyth, that is not good for the environment is it?
