A PROJECT to create a community space on the Llyn Peninsula has so far received over £17,000 through an online fundraising page.

The pioneering young team of Mali Davies-Hughes, Urien Davies-Hughes and Sadbh Burke are behind the project.

They are crowdfunding to create a garden café and community hub at the Felin Uchaf Centre in Rhoshirwaun.

The superstructure is a magnificent, naturally curved timber-frame and straw-bale build, made of locally sourced materials and beautifully crafted by volunteers from all over the world.

Mali told the Cambrian News about the project, what the group aim to do with the building and how they intend to turn it into a centre of the community.

She said: “Through your support we aim to complete the final stages of the construction and refurbishment to be able to warmly welcome the public through the hand-carved oak doors.

“The café will provide coffee made using only top-quality Fairtrade beans and a barista in the know (because we love great coffee!).

“We will have a range of cakes to choose from for those of you with a sweet tooth, as well as a range of sandwiches and soups using as much as we can from our own community garden.

“Cakes, pastries and sourdough will be freshly baked on-site, and the wood-fired cob oven will also be used for pop-up pizza evenings.

“Lined with artwork and bookshelves, the café will provide a relaxed and warm environment for you, our customers.”

Mali added: “In the evenings, the café space will be used to host a varied programme, from music, traditional Welsh Noson Lawen performances, storytelling, cultural events, and celebrations to community pizza nights.

“To top it all off, not only will you feel fantastic enjoying local and sustainable produce, but also, through your custom, you’ll be supporting valuable training opportunities for young people and volunteers at the Felin Uchaf Centre.”

The group are continuing to call on the support of the community to make sure the project can be completed.

Mali added: “So that Caffi Felin can serve our local community, volunteers, and visitors, we’re asking for your support.

“Through donating towards this Crowdfunder appeal, you’ll make this vision a reality.

“This includes meeting the costs of the remaining capital items, full-access ramps, catering kitchen fixtures, fittings, and essential appliances.”

There will also be a memento for anyone donating with a tree being planted on land at the site for each donation received.

Mali said: “As well as this, we will follow through on your support by taking the positive action of planting a tree – oak, silver birch, hazel, holly or maple - in your name with a signed certificate - on the 23 acres of sustainably managed land at Felin Uchaf for each donation given.”
