Council officers have been asked to investigate whether all of the county’s car parks are cost-effective, considering the cost of maintenance and regular visits by officers in comparison with how much money is raised through the car parks.
But some councillors on the thriving communities scrutiny committee have questioned whether abandoning the charges if it’s considered the car parks are not cost effective would be considered unfair if other towns still charge for parking and if it could lead to parking spaces being taken up all day with visitors unable to access parking spaces.
Committee chair Ifan Davies suggested that the council could actually be paying money to operate some car parks. He said: “Some car parks may be costing us money to run.”
However, other councillors said scrapping those charges could be considered unfair in other towns and could lead to spaces being used all day by people working in town or residents.
