FUNDING for sea defence work at Aberaeron has still not been decided more than two years after a funding bid was lodged with the Welsh Government.

But Ceredigion County Council chiefs have said they are hopeful that funding could soon be made available after the Welsh Government asked the authority to check if anything in the funding application has changed.

Despite putting in the funding bid two years ago, the Welsh Government has failed to make a decision on whether to provide cash for the upgrade works to the area of the south of Aberaeron.

However, Huw Morgan, the director of highways, said a recent request for the council to clarify whether there had been any significant changes to the funding bid for the scheme meant it was hoped that funding could soon be announced.

He said: “We are hopeful funding will be forthcoming from the Welsh Government. We’ve recognised match funding in next year’s capital programme so everything is in place from the council’s end.”

A council spokesperson said it is hoped that the Welsh Government will agree to fund 75 per cent of the scheme with the authority providing match funding, which has already been included in the council’s capital budget.
