Madam,

The BBC last night indulged in their favourite pastime, Trump bashing. They showed a vast stretch of the Mexican desert across which the President’s wall will pass and talked of threats to deer.

Contrast this with interest in the Artro lagoon in the heart of Snowdonia - part of the panorama which Hilaire Belloc described as the finest in all Europe.

This lovely mile-long lagoon is bordered by three parishes, and has a tiny entrance easily defended. It hosts 34 species of birds, otters, mullet, trout and salmon, plus a great range of human activities.

All of this is to be abandoned as global warming takes effect and the sea breaks through the dunes.

The lagoon will become just another Welsh estuary rather than the only natural haven from Caernarfon, 80 miles to Cardigan. The costs of protecting it would be peanuts. But it is an SSSI, a site of special scientific interest, and we are not allowed to do so. A local farmer was penalised. The villagers have fought against this over many years.

Yours etc,

Graham Tottle, Llanbedr.
