Madam,

Porthmadog Town Council decided on Tuesday night to stand firm against Gwynedd Council’s blackmail with their threat to close toilets unless we stump up cash.

The county council has now published their latest Cabinet recommendations to be discussed on 27 June. Basically, what they’re saying is that they’re going to carry on threatening to close our toilets until we pay up to take over the running of them.

This has been going on for far too long and they need to accept that they are in the wrong and back down.

The fact that many community councils across the county have given in is all the more reason for Porthmadog to hold its backbone and stand firm, for the sake of what is decent and right.

In the scheme of things, we are not talking about a large amount of money in this instance. What’s at stake is the question of whether or not, in the future, community councils are going to be merely another tool for the county to squeeze precious cash from struggling communities.

Yours etc,

Cllr Jason Humphreys, Heol Newydd, Porthmadog.
