A Cardigan triathlete who was severely injured in a motorbike crash six years ago is hoping to raise £1,000 in a 100-mile handbike challenge.

Darren Williams, 32, was a pillion passenger on a motorbike involved in a fatal collision with a 4x4 towing a trailer on the B4548 near Gwbert in April 2014. Tragically, the rider died at the scene and Mr Williams was airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff with what police described as “serious injuries”.

Now the former Cardigan Primary School pupil hopes to raise £1,000 by pedalling his handbike from Cardiff’s Principality Stadium all the way to Cardigan Rugby Club.

He is hoping to raise funds for an inclusive world-class gym at the town’s primary school.

The dad-of-two said he was ‘passionate’ about helping the school attain their £25,000 target.

“This gym will be able to be used by children of all abilities including children with autism and those with extra physical needs,” said Darren.

“I myself went to the school, my eldest is there now, and my youngest will be going too. I also know plenty of people whose children go to the school. It is important children exercise and it’ll be fantastic to have a facility like this for them to use.”

Looking ahead to his challenge in the last weekend of May, Darren said: “Personally, this is a very big distance as, to date, the most I’ve cycled is 30 miles.

“Rhys Harries, my coach, has kindly offered to ride the whole journey by my side, which will help me massively. I’ve known Rhys 30 years and I couldn’t think of anyone better to ride it with me.”
