TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular retired teacher and Aberystwyth Rugby Club stalwart who passed away this week.

Rhidian Hughes, also known as Bish in rugby circles, died at Bronglais Hospital on Monday.

He was described by friends and former pupils as a “great character”, a “wonderful teacher” and someone who was “always laughing and full of fun”.

Rhidian, who was in his 60s, had worked at Penparcau, St Padarn’s, and Borth primary schools as teacher and later headmaster. He travelled extensively in Australia, New Zealand and South America after he retired.

He settled for several years in Guatemala, but was a regular visitor back to his home town.

Rhidian earned his nickname ‘Bish’ playing scrum-half for many years for Aberystwyth, after the former Pontypool great David Bishop, whose game he emulated.

Tim Lewis, chairman of Aberystwyth Rugby Club, said that Rhidian’s passing was a “very sad day for the club”.

“He was a hugely popular member of Aberystwyth Rugby Club, both as a player and a committee member,” he said. “His passing is a huge loss to the club.

“It is a very sad week losing such a likeable character.”

Rhidian’s funeral will be held on Wednesday, 23 August, at Aberystwyth crematorium at 1pm.
