A WORLD War One soldier from Aberporth was remembered on the 100th anniversary of his death on Saturday.

Pvt William Griffith James, 31, of The Welsh Regiment, was killed fighting against the Turks in Mesopotamia on 21 January 1917, and is buried at a military cemetery in Iraq.

Aberporth Community Council and members of the Royal British Legion formed a committee in 2014 to commemorate each of the village’s fallen on the centenary of their deaths.

On Saturday, after the bells of St Cynwyls Church were sounded, a small group made their way to Aberporth primary school to plant a symbolic wooden cross in the school’s World War One remembrance garden.

Cllr Anne McCreary said Pvt James was also the subject of a discussion at the school’s assembly.

“We think it’s very important that these young men and the sacrifice they made for their country are remembered,” she said. “Pvt James is the first of 10 soldiers we will be honouring on the centenary of their deaths in the coming year.”
