A 25-YEAR-OLD Morfa Nefyn woman is in training to become the first fully-trained female coxswain in the 151-year history of Porthdinllaen RNLI lifeboat station.

Caryl Parry Thomas, who has been a volunteer crew member at Porthdinllaen RNLI for the past eight years, is hoping to join a long and illustrious list of coxswains at the Llyn station.

If she is successful she will be the first woman since Porthdinllaen Lifeboat Station was founded in 1864 to qualify to be in command of the lifeboat and its crew when it goes to sea.

Caryl said: “I’ve been training under Mike’s watchful eye for the last 18 months. Becoming a fully trained RNLI coxswain is another challenge which I’m determined to overcome.”
