CEREDIGION recognised some of its most talented sports stars, as well as the county’s coaches, volunteers, administrators and unsung heroes at its annual international awards ceremony at Aberaeron on Friday afternoon.

The prestigious ceremony, attended by former British Lions and Wales rugby international Brynmor Williams, was organised by Ceredigion Sports Council and Cerdigion Actif, and was sponsored by the Cambrian News.

Some 29 new internationals, across 10 sporting disciplines, as well as 21 of the county’s Most Talented Juniors were presented with their awards at Penmorfa.

Athletics coach Dic Evans was a popular winner the 2016 Ceredigion Sports Coach of the Year, whilst coaches and organisers from Aberystwyth Basketball Club, Aberystwyth Gymnastics Club and West Wales Cycle Racing Team also picked up awards.

The remarkable achievements of Corporal Ian Taylor, of Taliesin, who took home a gold medal and a bronze medal in two different events at this year’s Invictus Games was also recognised.

Ceredigion Sports Council Chairman Gareth Lloyd said: “There are people from all over Ceredigion who fit into the different levels of the sporting pathway, from local community clubs, to reaching county level, and then onto the international stage.

“It is important to celebrate success, but also to remember the coaches, parents, teachers and the volunteers in every club, for without them many of sports people may not be here today being recognised.

“I also thank all our supporters, the Cambrian News, Sport Wales and Ceredigion County Council for making this happen.”
