DOLGELLAU registered a win over Aberaeron in the Rachel’s West Wales Conference on Sunday, after opting to bat first and scoring 233 for 4 in 40 overs.

The visitors replied with 142 all out in 33.3 overs as Dolgellau won by 91 runs.

Dolgellau’s batting hero was opening bat Greg Smithies, who struck an excellent century, retiring not out on 122 after the 36th over with the total on 214 for 3.

Smithies dispatched the bowling to all corners of the ground in his 109 ball stay at the crease, hitting a six and 13 fours in the process. Smithies must take a liking to the Aberaeron bowling, as 10 years ago, almost to the day, and also at home, he scored 150 from 67 balls in a T20 match.

Smithies and Sam Williams, 15, had an opening alliance of 60 runs in 10 overs.

Skipper Jack Williams joined Smithies in a productive partnership of 102 for the second wicket; Williams making 39 with 5 fours until he was caught by Jacob Jenkinson off visiting captain Hywel Rees.

Rob Humphreys was on 27 not out when the Dolgellau innings closed on 233 for 4, Smithies’ 122 taking the accolade.

Four bowlers had a wicket apiece; Paul Hughes 1 for 52, Steff Rees 1 for 51, Hywel Rees 1 for 46 and Gwion Davies 1 for 14, while Chris Strange held a catch on the boundary to dismiss Dave Jenkins.

In the Aberaeron reply, the first four batsmen all reached double figures.

Hywel Rees, batting at number four, led the way with 46 runs, a six and 3 fours, run out by a Smithies direct hit. Chris Strange made 33 also with a six and 3 fours, adjudged lbw to Jack Williams

Opener John Fice made 19, run out by Callum Taylor with an excellent piece of fielding, and Wyn Williams scored 12, caught Taylor bowled Jack Williams who claimed 4 for 41 from his 9 overs and also had two run outs as Aberaeron were all out for 142 giving Dolgellau a 91 run victory. In Dolgellau’s attack, Sam Williams took 1 for 20 and Phil Leeds 1 for 29.
