THE match of the day in the West Wales Conference was at Aberaeron, where Commoners were the visitors for a top of the table clash - and the sides not disappoint, with boundaries galore.

Aberaeron’s Chris Strange took centre stage with a stunning knock of 204 not out as the hosts chased down a big total on 306 for 4 to claim victory by six wickets.

The star of the show for the visitors was the hard-hitting Umar Aslam with a quite magnificent 154, including 11 fours and 12 sixes, and he was unlucky not to carry his bat to the end, when stumped by John Fice off the bowling of Hywel Rees, as the Commoners’ innings drew to a close.

Openers Neil Stent (23) and Rakesh Bhatia (26) laid the foundations, and Jacob Hughes-Pickering (24), Will Copeland (21) and Ian Lawton (17) helped Commoners to 305 for 6 after their 40 overs. Jacob Jenkinson claimed 2 for 58, with one wicket each for Paul Hughes, Hywel Rees, Neil Snowdon and Dave Grinzpan.

Such a high total looked out of reach early on, as the Aberaeron reply faltered on 18 for 1 and 21 for 2, with the dismissals of John Fice and Paul Hughes.

The hard-hitting Chris Strange (204 not out), however, turned the tables with a superb unbeaten double century, which included some 24 fours and 14 big sixes.

The Commoners missed their chance to claim his wicket when he was dropped on 16, and after that the boundary was peppered in all direction, with Strange being supported with contributions by Steffan Rees (36) and Hywel Rees (17 not out).

Lawton took 2 for 77 for the Commoners, but with Strange in full flow, Aberaeron passed the post on 306 for 4, with five overs to spare, to extend their unbeaten run to five matches at the top of the West Wales Cricket Club Conference table.
