FFOS y Ffin cyclist Josh Tarling produced a performance of remarkable courage, grit and determination as he took on the opening time trial of the Vuelta a España on Saturday evening.
After a week of unimaginable heartbreak following the deaths of his younger brother Finlay and grandfather Gerald, Tarling chose to line up for Netcompany INEOS at one of cycling's biggest events in a fitting tribute to their memory.
The 22-year-old briefly led the stage after an outstanding ride through the streets of Monaco, supported by his family, team-mates, the people of Wales and the wider cycling community.
That he was ultimately beaten only by stage winner Tadej Pogačar and fellow Briton Ethan Hayter did nothing to diminish an inspirational performance as he launched his Tour of Spain campaign in style.
Tarling's father, Michael, posted after the race: "We are so proud of this kid. After what he's been through in the past week just taking the start has blown us away.
"To come close to the win and take 3rd and the young riders jersey is just incredible and testament to his strength.
"It's a long road ahead both at the Vuelta and away from it but we'll get through it as a family together.
"Thank you for the continued messages of support for all of us, it's been a huge help.
"The legacy fund for Fin is still open too, thank you so much for all the donations."
Netcompany INEOS team director Geraint Thomas said: "To put in a performance like that is just fantastic really. It shows the class of him as an athlete and a person. I couldn't be prouder."
“Yesterday was the first time he’d ridden a bike properly in a while.”
