ABERAERON continued to fly high in the Spar Mid Wales League division one as visitors Llanidloes Town conceded in four goals for the second game in succession.
Having lost 4-2 to Berriew a few days before, Llani were again left exposed from set-pieces as a hat-trick from Sion Clarke in the second half gave Aberaeron a 4-0 home victory, to move them up to third position in the league table.
By contrast, defeat saw the Daffs slip to fourth-bottom, but boss Hugh Clarke remains upbeat as his side prepare for a tough trip to take on unbeaten leaders Rhayader Town on Friday night.
“For 60 minutes we felt we were the better side, but we were undone by four set pieces, the first from a free kick, then three corners,” said Daffs boss Clarke.
“It’s frustrating as we did well for a lot of the game, particularly in the first half, but you can’t expect to concede four goals and go on to win games.
“It’s not just the defence, we are all in it together, but we’ve got a good bunch of lads, and they are learning.
“There were still plenty of positives, and on our day I still believe that we can beat anyone in this league.”
The Daffs are short defensively at the moment, with Harri Clarke out for five weeks with a broken hand, and Alex Jones set to leave for University.
They had chances with Gareth Owen failing to capitalise on a headed chance from a Steve Jones cross, while Josh Matthews fired over - but defensive failings from set plays proved costly.
The Daffs trailed at the break when ex-Penrhyncoch forward Mattie Davies pounced to score after keeper Jake Brown had failed to hold a free kick.
In the second half, ex-Caersws defender Sion Clarke completed a hat-trick, all from corners, two with headers and another a close range shot.
Having defeated Berriew 4-2 in the Welsh Cup the Saturday before, Llanidloes found the roles were reversed as they slipped to a midweek defeat by an identical 4-2 score in the league.
The Daffs were three goals down following a poor first half display before getting back into the game with replies from Gareth Owen and Josh Evans.
Richard Davies fired a hat-trick for the hosts, whilst former Llani player Karl Seliaerts also found the net.
Bow Street produced a fine performance to hold Rhayader Town to a 1-1 draw, with the league leaders needing a Tom Bethell penalty to earn a draw.
Ryan Davies had put the Magpies ahead after 10 minutes, following an assist from Ifan Burrell, but the visitors fought back strongly in front of large crowd to equalise on 65 minutes.
On Friday evening, Carno had climbed to second in the table after completing the double over Welshpool Town, courtesy of a goal in each half from Jordan Jones and Ollie Lewis.
Yet again the Greens were missing a number of players with Daniel Lewis, Ben Richards, Ger Jones, Gregg Brown, Steve Jones and Danny Pierce all missing, whilst Richie Evans was also suspended for this game.
The hosts, however, started brightly and could have been two-up inside 20 minutes as Peter Rees fired just over and Jordan Jones also volleyed wide.
The breakthrough came when Carno’s Jordan Jones rose highest to head home a corner from Ashley Owen.
Carno started the second half brightly and Ollie Lewis whipped a corner straight into the net to double the lead.
Peter Rees and sub Sam Williams both had efforts to increase the lead, but Welshpool’s best chance came from a set-piece that struck the bar.
Keeper Kris Williams was equal to everything Welshpool could offer as they saw out the remaining minutes.
Hay St Mary’s beat Llanrhaeadr 2-0, courtesy of goals from Ryan Davies and Rob Snedden, with a penalty.
It took the Saints just five minutes to open the scoring, when Snedden flicked the ball on to Davies, who saw his initial effort saved, before Davies pounced on the loose ball to slot home.
Snedden volleyed over and Jack Biggs went close with a header, and in the second half Owen Lloyd and Matt Croose also went close for the Saints.
But in the 90th minute, Ryan Losito was pulled back in the area, and Snedden netted the penalty to seal victory.
Berriew won 5-3 at Tywyn/Bryncrug as two goals from Rich Davies and singles from Ross Harris, George Davies and Steff Rogers moved the Rhiewsiders up to second place in the table.
Tywyn, still seeking their first win, replied with a brace from Nick Williams and a Mark Edmondson effort.
Machynlleth triumphed 3-1 at Llandrindod, with goals by Callum Page, Joseph Bell and Andrew Page, whilst Leroy Smith replied for the hosts.
Elsewhere four goals by Joey Price earned Radnor Valley a solid 4-0 win over struggling Montgomery Town.
A hat-trick from Ieuan Brooks ensured that Dolgellau maintained their 100 per cent home record with a 4-3 win over Churchstoke in the Spar Mid Wales divison two.
Brooks was also shown a red card for a second booking, but a late winner from George Townshend-Jackson secured them three points.
Borth United maintained their unbeaten record as goals by Liam Lewis and Lee Crumpler sealed a 2-1 win at Four Crosses, who replied through Josh Biggs.
Leaders Builth Wells slipped to a 5-4 defeat at Abermule, where the hosts hit back from being 4-1 down to win with goals from Craig Clayton, Steff Rowlands, Ryan Evans, Charlie Humphreys and Rob Bayliss.
Second-placed Kerry also lost 2-0 at home to Newbridge through goals from Aeron Powell and Lyndon Jones, whilst goals from Nathan Prodger, Bryn Jones and Nathan Buckley earned Llansantffraid Village a 3-2 home win over Penybont, who replied through Phil Ruell and Shane Pritchard.
Presteigne registered a 3-1 away win at Dyffryn Banw.
