IFAN Burrell fired a sensational four goals on his debut as Aberaeron secured a chaotic 7-3 away win at Kerry on Saturday afternoon, writes Dafydd Jones.

The majority of the match was a close encounter, but Aberaeron put Kerry to the sword with a flurry of late goals to claim their second win of the season in the MMP Mid Wales division one.

Burrell, who recently signed from Bow Street, forced a fine early save from home keeper Trystan Davies, who sprawled off his line to save with an outstretched leg.

At the other end Kerry’s striker Mark Hughes glanced his header wide from close range, but the hosts were to rue their missed chance as the lively visitors made the breakthrough.

A hooked clearance from an in-swinging near post corner bounced up for Burrell, who swivelled to lash a powerful half-volley in off the post.

Soon after, Mattie Davies was pulled down on the edge of the box and undeterred by the large wall, Davies’ swirling free kick hit the woodwork.

Kerry were gifted an equaliser when the unfortunate Dan Bourne sliced the ball from a free kick into the top corner of his own net, but then Aberaeron hit back when Davies squared the ball across the face of the goal, for Burrell to tap home his second goal.

Minutes before half time, Burrell struck again for his first ever hat-trick, making it 3-1 with a stunning half-volley from 25 yards out. Keeper Trystan Davies, who saw the ball late, made a reactionary dive to his right, but the shot was too powerful and it sailed into the bottom corner.

The second half started with a bang as skilful Kerry winger Luke Mumford dispatched a half-volley from distance to make it 2-3, but Aberaeron weathered the storm, before extending their advantage.

Davies latched on to a heavy pass and then unselfishly dinked the ball towards the back post, for Burrell to slot home his fourth goal of the afternoon.

Almost from the restart, Max McLaughlin gave the home side a glimmer of hope when he netted with a tidy left-footed finish into the bottom right to make it 3-4.

Five minutes later, however, prolific striker Mattie Davies got on the score-sheet as a slight nudge into the back of the centre-half gave him enough time and space to score with a composed finish.

In the final 10 minutes, Aberaeron scored twice more to seal an emphatic 7-3 victory.

Central-defensive midfielder James Hemming skipped cleverly away from one challenge to strike a speculative effort across goal that forced the keeper to parry, and Dan James tapped in the rebound.

The final goal, perhaps the pick of the bunch, then came from Aberaeron’s Gareth Severs with a wonderful chip from 20 yards out, which nestled in the top corner.

• Bow Street are still seeking their first league win of the season after pacesetters Llanfair United maintained their 100 per cent start with a solid 4-1 home win.

Llanfair were ahead on 37 minutes with a fantastic 20 yard strike by Nathan Edgington, and just three minutes later Josh Astley also scored with a lovely strike.

A blistering start to the second half saw youngster Ryan McVeagh pull the ball back for Toby Evans to fire home, and Josh Astley grabbed his second to effectively kill off the game on 50 minutes.

Tom Williams did pull a goal back, but Llanfair held out for a deserved win.

Mark Edmondson scored a hat-trick as pacesetters Caersws notched a sixth successive win with a 6-0 triumph over Llandrindod Wells. Jake Parr, Elliot Jones and Craig Harri also netted for the Bluebirds.

Berriew hammered stuggling Knighton 9-0 with Joe Haycock, Calum Greatorex and Steffan Rogers all scoring twice, with further goals being scored by Ismail Ozdemir, Xavier Matisse and George Mitten.

An excellent 85th minute strike from Jake Mann earned Welshpool Town a 3-2 win over Tywyn/Bryncrug on Friday evening, after goals from Ian Macleod and Ricky Litchfield were cancelled out by Tywyn’s Nick Williams and Dave Jenkins.
