CAERNARFON Town legend Darren Thomas has announced his departure from the Oval after 15 years with the club.

The long-serving midfielder said the decision was one of the toughest of his career but felt the time was right to move on in search of more regular game time.

Thomas, who grew up in Ysgubor Goch, said playing for his hometown club had always been a dream.

“When I was young, I could hear the crowd at the Oval from my home. As a Cofi, all I ever wanted was to play for Caernarfon Town,” said the ‘Cofi Messi’.

During his time at the club, Thomas helped Caernarfon enjoy the most successful period in their history, winning major honours, qualifying for Europe and establishing themselves among the top sides in Welsh football.

Reflecting on his career, he admitted he could never have imagined the level of success the club would achieve when he first joined.

“To wear the shirt, walk out at the Oval and represent Caernarfon has meant everything to me,” he added.

Thomas said captaining the side in recent years had been a huge honour, with winning the Welsh Cup for the first time and competing in Europe standing out as his proudest moments.

“I joined the club wanting to win the Welsh Cup, so achieving that was a dream come true.”

He also paid tribute to supporters, thanking the Cofi Army for their backing throughout his career.

“The fans have always been incredible, and playing in front of them has meant a lot. Many of my friends follow the club and I’ll be back at the Oval whenever I can to support the team.”

Thomas thanked players, staff and supporters for their role in his journey and revealed he is still expected to receive a testimonial, giving him one final appearance in Caernarfon colours.

“Thank you, Cofis.”
