DOLGELLAU Athletic had to settle for a point after being held to a 1-1 draw by Kerry in their Lock Stock Ardal North East clash on Saturday.

Heavy showers before kick-off left the surface slippery and difficult, making for a fiercely contested encounter in which loose balls regularly led to crunching challenges and hard-fought battles.

Dolgellau enjoyed promising spells during the opening half and looked to trouble the hosts with a series of deliveries into the penalty area. However, Kerry defended resolutely and prevented the visitors from building any sustained momentum.

The home side broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark. Following a free-kick into the box, the ball broke kindly for Neil Mitchell, who reacted quickest to fire home. Goalkeeper Tyler Andrews was unsighted by a crowd of players and had little chance of keeping out the effort.

Dolgellau were handed a route back into the game just before the break. Rob John Kimberley and Tomos Jones combined well, and Jones was brought down by two challenges just inside the area. Gerwyn Williams stepped up and calmly converted the resulting penalty to send the sides into half-time level at 1-1.

The second period followed a similar pattern, although Dolgellau gradually began to enjoy more possession and territorial advantage while Kerry remained dangerous on the counter-attack.

Clear-cut opportunities were at a premium as both defences stood firm. Efforts from Osian Morris, Jones and Williams were all dealt with, while Aaron Young's strike from distance also failed to find a way through.

Dolgellau manager Rob Evans said: “A tough battle today. There were some positives from the effort, but we did not play as well as we could.

“But in fairness, Kerry competed very well and a draw on the day was probably a fair result.”

The point leaves Dolgellau third in the table ahead of Saturday's FAW Welsh Cup trip to Anglesey, where they will take on Gaerwen.

Meanwhile, Bow Street endured a difficult afternoon as they suffered a 4-1 defeat away to Cefn Albion at The Muga.

Despite enjoying a strong record against the hosts, the Magpies found themselves three goals down inside the opening 25 minutes.

Declan Molyneux opened the scoring after just five minutes following good work with Dion Gibbins, before Callum Mannion doubled the lead on 20 minutes after a move involving Thomas Broadhurst and Gibbins.

Gibbins then added a third, with Torne Samuels providing the assist, as Cefn Albion seized complete control. Broadhurst capped an excellent display by making it 4-0 shortly after the hour mark.

Bow Street grabbed a late consolation through Steffan Williams in stoppage time but were unable to avoid defeat.

The Magpies will aim to bounce back when they host Llangollen Town on Saturday, although another stern test awaits. Llangollen warmed up for the fixture with an impressive 4-0 victory over Builth Wells thanks to goals from Oliver Clowes, Paige Wilding, Jamie Hands and substitute Edward Baker.

At the top of the table, Penycae moved three points clear after a dramatic 2-1 victory over early leaders Queens Park. Matthew Worrall gave the visitors the lead after they had missed an early penalty, before Joshua Mazzarell equalised on the hour. Substitute Evan Davies then struck a stoppage-time winner.

Elsewhere, Llanfair United beat Carno 3-1, Knighton Town defeated Rhos Aelwyd 2-1, while Radnor Valley and Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant finished goalless.
