ABERAERON were unable to prevent Llanelli from marching on into the second round of the JD Welsh Cup as four goals from former Swansea City striker Lee Trundle capped an emphatic 6-1 triumph for the high-flying Welsh League outfit.

The visitors were already four goals to the good at the interval, including a first half hat-trick by Trundle, and although the visitors had Luke Jones sent off for a push on goalkeeper Barry Edwards in the second half, there was to be no way back.

Llanelli opened the scoring after just six minutes when Liam Samuel crossed for Ross Jones to head home, but Aberaeron almost hit back when the ball was played through for Matthew Davies, only to be denied by a last-gasp tackle by Joe Clarke.

Aberaeron were made to pay on 25 minutes when Trundle cut inside on the right, before unleashing a ferocious finish, which gave Edwards no chance of saving.

Samuel directed a shot on the turn just wide, before the lead was increased further in the 37th minute when some more Trundle trickery in the box led to a lunge by Sion Clarke, resulting in a penalty.

Trundle himself stepped up to put away the kick, and within a minute he completed his treble by winning an aerial duel on the edge of the area, before gaining possession and firing into the vacant net.

Trundle then sent another attempt inches off target just before the interval, and it was more of the same after the restart, with Samuel’s shot cleared off the line.

Luke Jones received his marching orders after 52 minutes, but a second penalty was awarded to the Reds when Trundle was again floored in the box, this time by Elwyn Edwards, and he fired home to notch up his fourth goal in the 58th minute.

Substitute Chris Jones made it 6-0, when combining with Trundle, before firing past Edwards, but the home side had the final say with the award of a third penalty of the match with just two minutes left.

Davies stepped up, and although keeper Craig Morris got his hands to the spot kick, he could not keep it out as Aberaeron finished with a deserved consolation.

• BOW STREET produced a spirited display as they made high-flying Cymru Alliance side Airbus UK Broughton work for a 3-0 win at the Hollingsworth Stadium.

Pavel Vieira’s 20-yard shot was easily saved by visiting keeper Steph Richards in the early exchanges while, at the other end, Andy Coughlin had to deal with a long range effort from Mark Gornall.

Alfons Fosu-Mensah was just wide with a crashing shot from the edge of the 18-yard box, before Airbus took the lead on 33 minutes when a left-wing corner from Wes Baynes eluded the keeper’s grasp and flew straight into the far corner.

The lead was doubled in the 54th-minute when Leo Riley scored from Fosu-Mensah’s byline cross, and further home chances saw sub Luke Busumbru hit the post and a Peers header and a rasping Riley free-kick were well saved by Richards.

After Steve Tomassen had headed wide from a Baynes cross, the Magpies defence was finally breached six minutes from time by Murphy, who did well to find the back of the net after being picked-out at the far post by Riley’s pin-point cross.

• PENRHYNCOCH meanwhile kept their Ceredigion flag flying by beating Swansea club Garden Village 4-3 in extra-time.

Jonathan Evans had opened the scoring when he latched onto a through ball, before lifting the ball over the keeper, but the Welsh League division two side hit back to lead 3-1, with goals from Elliott Rees and Joshua Bradshaw, with a brace.

The Roosters clawed their way back, with Rob Murfet reducing the arrears with a fine strike, and Steff Davies took the tie into extra time, before completing the fightback with his second of the game.

• LLANIDLOES Town were left to rue missed chances as they bowed out of the JD Welsh Cup with a 2-1 away at Buckley.

The Daffs led at the break through Gareth Owen’s header, but Aron Williams levelled and a headed own goal from Ryan Biggs saw Buckley claim victory.

Carno also crashed out as goals from Kack Challonor, from the penalty spot, Obi Anoruo, Owen Roberts and Jack Edwards sentenced them to a 4-0 at home to Cymru Alliance side Gresford Athletic.
