DOLGELLAU Athletic kept the Meirionnydd flag flying in the FAW Welsh Cup with an impressive 4-1 victory at Penycae to reach the last 32, but it was a day to forget for Llanuwchllyn, who crashed out following a heavy defeat at Newtown.

Fresh from a 5-1 league success over the same opponents at Cae Marian, Dolgellau completed a cup-and-league double over Penycae with another commanding display at Afoneitha Road.

Despite the convincing scoreline, the visitors were forced to recover from an early setback as Isaac Dawson fired Penycae ahead after just four minutes.

Falling behind has become a familiar theme in Dolgellau's cup run this season, but once again Rob Evans' side demonstrated the resilience and character that have underpinned their progress in the competition.

After weathering the early storm, Dolgellau gradually worked their way back into the contest and found a deserved equaliser on 33 minutes. Rob John Kimberley delivered an inviting cross into the area and Gerwyn Williams produced a fine header back across goal and into the far corner.

The equaliser lifted the visitors and they quickly seized the initiative. Winning possession in midfield, Evans started the move that led to Dolgellau's second goal before Williams linked well with Aaron Young, who showed great composure to finish clinically and send his side into the break with a 2-1 advantage.

Dolgellau emerged after half-time with real intent and effectively settled the tie during a dominant opening spell. A dangerous delivery from Evans towards the far post caused confusion in the Penycae defence and ended up in the net to make it 3-1.

Williams then capped an outstanding afternoon by grabbing his second goal. Holding off his marker inside the penalty area, he created enough space to fire a low effort into the bottom corner and put the result beyond doubt.

Further opportunities fell to Ioan Roberts and Osian Morris as the visitors continued to threaten, while goalkeeper Tyler Andrews contributed with a couple of important saves to extinguish any hopes of a late fightback.

The final whistle confirmed a deserved victory and secured Dolgellau's place in the Welsh Cup third round for the second successive season.

There was no such joy for Llanuwchllyn, whose cup campaign came to a painful end away to Newtown.

The hosts gained revenge for their dramatic penalty-shootout defeat to Llanuwchllyn in the competition two years ago and wasted little time in taking control. Sean Griffiths and Jamie Hyne struck inside the opening 15 minutes to leave the visitors facing an uphill battle.

Llanuwchllyn's afternoon worsened when captain Ilan Hughes was forced off through injury, disrupting the visitors' plans further. Newtown tightened their grip on the tie before the interval when Gareth Evans added a third goal, leaving Llanuwchllyn with a mountain to climb after the break.

Any realistic hopes of a comeback disappeared shortly after the hour mark when Dale Davies was shown a red card. With a numerical advantage, Newtown ruthlessly punished their opponents, with Hyne adding his second before Oliver Sharp and Hanoch Boakye completed a comprehensive victory.

While Dolgellau can now look forward to discovering their last-32 opponents, Llanuwchllyn must quickly regroup ahead of Saturday's eagerly anticipated league derby clash with Bala Town at Cae'r Llan, where they will be determined to deliver a far stronger response.
