LIAM Jaques scored a well-taken hat-trick as Aberaeron notched a quick-fire double over Ceredigion rivals Borth United in their rearranged Spar Mid Wales League division one match at Park Avenue.
With snow and ice having wiped out the football programme, Aberaeron took the chance to follow up their 2-0 home win over the Crows the previous week with an emphatic 6-1 triumph on Saturday.
In freezing conditions, Aberaeron gave notice of their intent as a rasping strike from Mattie Davies was tipped over the crossbar by Borth keeper Alex Pennock.
Jaques in particular was very lively and was involved in most of the early exchanges, whilst Chris Wilkins had the beating of the Borth left back and was able to put in some dangerous crosses.
Aberaeron made the breakthrough on 10 minutes when a move involving over a dozen passes saw the ball fall at the feet of Jaques, who switched the ball onto his favoured left foot and unleashed a thunderbolt which struck the post and went into the net from around 20 yards out.
Borth captain Sam Middleton was unlucky to see his 35 yard screamer clear the bar by inches, and soon after Ryan Davies squared the ball to Nick Jarvis, whose snap shot was turned away for a corner.
Aberaeron, however, came close again as Elwyn Edwards played a great 60 yard diagonal pass to Wilkins, who then played a dangerous cross behind Borth’s defence, and was cleared for a corner.
Another similar great diagonal pass by Dan James again found Wilkins, who ran at the defence before delivering a telling cross for James, who had sprinted 70 yards to get in the penalty box, to tap home a fabulous goal to double the lead.
Aberaeron keeper Barry Edwards was called up to make an excellent double save, but this spurred Aberaeron on and a good passing move found Jaques 25 yards from goal and he unleashed a superb strike in to the top corner, giving the goalkeeper absolutely no chance for 3-0.
The second half was less one-sided initially, with Borth trying hard to make a game of it, and keeper Edwards was again called upon to keep the Crows out.
Aberaeron, however, sealed their win as one of many good passing moves found Jaques in the left channel, and he moved the ball neatly before striking a left-footed rocket that ripped into the top corner of the net, with the keeper bamboozled.
Matty Davies, who had terrorised the Borth defence throughout, then scored a well-deserved goal by latching onto a poor defensive pass and slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the net for 5-0.
Aberaeron brought on their substitutes for the final 20 minutes and this, initially, back-fired when a weak back pass was intercepted and Marcin Matyja rounded Edwards to score with a quality finish.
Aberaeron were not finished, however, and they had the final say when youth player Ianto Evans latched onto a poor defensive pass to slide the ball under the advancing goalkeeper to make it 6-1.
Second-from-bottom Borth are back in action at home Berriew on Saturday, whilst Aberaeron, who moved up to seventh place, journey to Tywyn/Bryncrug.
