LLANDYSUL secured their first Costcutter Ceredigion League division one championship for 68 years when they beat Aberaeron Reserves 3-1 at Parc Tir y Dref on Saturday.
The final whistle signalled scenes of great joy and jubilation in front of a sizeable crowd, and the champagne fizzed as players and supporters soaked in the historic occasion.
Speaking after the game Swallows manager Chris ‘Coco’ Davies said he was enormously proud of his team.
“I am so pleased that we got the job done today, and managed to win the title after such a long wait,” he said.
“I may be from Carmarthen, but I love the village of Llandysul and its people, and they all deserve this after all the hard work they have put in, including the supporters, the committee and of course this squad of players.
“I went close as a player here in Llandysul over 20 years ago when we were pipped to second place by St Dogmaels, so this is special for me.
“I am going to savour it, but not for too long as we have the final of the Emrys Morgan Cup coming up and we desperately want to win that too.”
Llandysul clinched the Costcutter Ceredigion League title with two matches to go, and they have been the stand out team all season - and they have yet to lose a single league game.
They didn’t get it all their own way against an Aberaeron Reserves side strengthened by the addition of a few first teamers, however, and they made life very hard for the home side.
It had been all Llandysul in the opening 10 minutes, and they could well have been four goals up as Ben Thomas, Dean Jones, Terry Maynard and Lewis Jones all went very close.
The deadlock was broken on 20 minutes when Lewis Jones headed in a fine cross from Adrian Hazelby, and the floodgates looked like opening.
This was not to be the case, however, as a determined Aberaeron played very well, and the champions elect were very nervous for the next hour.
They did manage to go 2-0 up when Scott Thomas netted with a fine finish, but the Black and Ambers responded when wide man Ollie Edwards took full advantage of a poor back pass by Maynard to slot the ball home.
This signalled an edgy period for Llandysul, as the visitors threatened to equalise on a couple of occasions, but this changed when midway through the half when the leaders brought on striker Simon Davies after a 14 week absence through injury.
Davies soon found his rhythm and it was his quick footwork that sent Maynard through to score the all important third goal, to kill the game off and seal the title for the riverside club.
Elsewhere, New Quay registered only their third league win of the season as goals from Nathan Davies, Andy Campbell and Aaron McCarthy secured a 3-2 win over Dewi Stars.
Last season’s champions Cardigan Town meanwhile registered a 3-1 win over Felinfach as two goals from Ewan Jones and a screamer by Ben Davies sealed the points, for their 11th league success of the season.
Felinfach are through to the final of the Cwpan Coffa Dai ‘Dynamo’ Davies after they registered a 5-1 win over Dolgellau Reserves last Tuesday.
The hero of the hour for the Milkmen was striker Kieron Boyes, who bagged a hat-trick to secure the first final place.
The Costcutter Ceredigion League side were pretty much home and dry by the break, with three goals in the bag through Rhys Jon and Boyes with a brace, before Dolgellau battled back.
Further goals from Boyes and Owain Evans killed the game off, before Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth League club Dolgellau claimed a late consolation.
Felinfach will play the winners of the semi-finals between Crannog and St Dogmaels, who beat Newcastle Emlyn 2-1 in their quarter-final last weekend.
Talented teen Dion Davies put Emlyn ahead early on before his strike partner Peter Almond deflected an Adam Williams free kick into his own net to level.
There was very little to choose between the teams going into the final quarter, but it was the hosts who finally edged it when Mindugas Simkevicius netted the winner for his team with a header from a Craig Williams corner.
Four goals from Peter Almond and a Ben Thomas effort had fired Newcastle Emlyn into the second round of the Bay Cup in midweek with a 5-2 extra-time win over Dewi Stars, who scored via William Williams and Rupert Geddes.
Last weekend Llanboidy also made progress into the last eight of the competition when they beat Maesglas 3-0, courtesy of goals from Rhys Jenkins, Dafydd Makepeace and Chris Bowen.
A hat-trick from Mike Glover helped steer Costcutter League Cup finalists Crannog safely through to the quarter finals with a 7-0 victory over Ffostrasol.
Marc Davies also bagged a brace, and Gary Davies and Dan Robinson netted.
Lampeter are also through to the last eight after they beat Aberporth 2-1.
