LLANDYSUL ensured that there will be a Costcutter Ceredigion League side in the final of the Emrys Morgan Cup on Good Friday after they demolished Guilsfield Reserves by 9-3 in their quarter-final tie last weekend.

The Swallows, who saved their best display of the season to comfortably beat the Montgomeryshire outfit, face holders Cardigan in their semi-final tie at Newcastle Emlyn on Thursday, in a bid to reach the final of this competition for the first time in their history.

The hero of the hour for the visitors was undoubtedly front runner Adrian Hazelby, who claimed a double hat-trick, as his team ran riot, especially in the second half - and the former Pencader striker could seriously trouble Steve Blackford’s Cardigan team.

Hazelby caused problems almost from kick-off against Guilsfield, and despite a promising start by the hosts the game was over early as a contest, with further goals from Ian Barret, Dean Jones and an own goal sending the visitors through to the last four.

Guilsfield Reserves replied through Luke Francis’ deflected shot after 16 minutes, but Llandysul were already out of sight when George Clifton and Phil Turnbull added late consolations.

Meanwhile division two side Dewi Stars saw their hopes of making it an all Costcutter League Final for the second year running ended in a 2-0 defeat to Llanfair United Reserves in the other semi at Llanidloes on Tuesday.

Llanfair held the upper hand for most of the game, especially the first half, and Josh Astley opened the scoring after 15 minutes with a brilliant free kick from 25 yards out.

Llanfair’s Josh Astley came close again with a few more long range efforts and Ashley Davies and Toby Evans also had efforts saved.

Llanfair, however, went two ahead after 35 minutes when Tim Dowling slipped in Ashley Davies down the right hand side channel and he beat the stranded Dewi Stars keeper.

Just before the break, Ashley Davies almost made it 3-0 but his effort from outside the area hit the post.

Llanfair held firm in the second half to claim the win, which sets up a first Emrys Morgan Cup Final for the club since 1991 when Llanfair won the trophy for a record fourth time.

• Newcastle Emlyn moved into the fourth round of the Cwpan Coffa Dai ‘Dynamo’ Davies, courtesy of their 2-0 win over Felinfach, with both their goals being scored by Huw Jones.
