ABERAERON were left to rue missed chances and poor discipline as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat away at Machynlleth in the Spar Mid Wales League division one on Tuesday.

Goals from Dewi Thomas and Dale Thomas turned the tables on the Seasiders, after Mattie Davies had opened the scoring for Aberaeron.

“We were unlucky as we could have been out of sight if we could have taken one more of the chances we created in the first half,” said Aberaeron’s Aneurin Roberts.

“Fair play to Mach, they had a game plan and played the surface much better than we did. The boys were disappointed with themselves and their performance.”

Buoyed on by their opening day win over Tywyn/Bryncrug, Aberaeron had started brightly and their pressure was rewarded when Mattie Davies opened the scoring, with his second goal in as many matches.

Aberaeron should have pushed on, but poor ball retention and decision making across the park let the home side back into the game.

At the end of the first half, a half-cleared corner saw Mach hit the bar, with the ball coming down over the line and bouncing out - but the referee didn’t award it.

The second half began much the same as the first ended, with Aeron failing to get a foot on the ball and running down blind alleys.

As their frustration crept in, they gave away unnecessary fouls, and from one free kick Mach delivered a ball into the box, and Dewi Thomas volleyed the equaliser from the tightest of angles.

Mach pushed on as Aberaeron’s second half display struggled to get out of first gear, and the visitors needed a fantastic save from the overworked Barry Edwards.

Minutes later Mach hit the post and the ball travelled across the line and was cleared away, only for Dale Thomas to be awarded a goal.

Aeron pushed Sion Clarke forward in the dying minutes, but he was adjudged to have stood on a player and shown a straight red card.

• BOW STREET bounced back from their opening day defeat against Berriew to record their first win of the season at home to Tywyn/Bryncrug on Tuesday night.

Goals from Steff Richards, with a driven shot across the keeper, Tom Williams, with a bullet from long range and Andrew Gittins, with a clinical finish from a tight angle inside the box saw Street to a comfortable home victory.

Assistant manager Richard Lucas said he was delighted with his side’s performance.

“The boys all put in a good shift, Llion Jenkins in his first game for the club impressed in midfield, and Ben Willis in goal made some important saves,” he said.

“Whilst always looking capable of scoring in this game, keeping the clean sheet was most pleasing.”

Rhayader Town maintained their strong start to the new season with a 3-1 win at Berriew on Tuesday.

Tom Bethell fired the Red Kites into a half-time lead after good work from Dane Griffiths, who also released Richie Powell to double the tally shortly after the break.

Berriew reduced the arrears through Matt Mumford, but the Red Kites were not to be denied and Bethell completed his brace to secure their victory with a thunderous free-kick from 25 yards.

Llanrhaeadr also notched their second win after grinding out a slender 1-0 win at home against Montgomery.

Kieran Evans and Ben White struck the woodwork for the hosts, before finally breaking the deadlock when Evans was brought down in the area after 55 minutes, with Iwan Matthews stepping up to bag his fifth goal of the season from the spot.

On Wednesday night, Hay St Marys took their first half chances to beat Knighton Town 2-0 under the lights.

Kevin Jones got on the end of a Jack Biggs header from a Brendan Hackett corner to open the scoring in the 18th minute, and Jack Biggs then hit a 30 plus yarder for an early goal of the season contender in the 32nd minute.

Llandrindod Wells edged a 1-0 midweek win over Welshpool Town after Ben Jones had set up Stuart Lee Williams for the only goal.

• BORTH United made a winning start to their new campaign in the Spar Mid Wales League division two as they beat Dyffryn Banw 3-0 away from home last Wednesday.

Borth took the lead after 15 minutes when Gwion Pugh-Jones scored with a glancing header from a Ryan Davies corner kick, and then on the stroke of half time Liam Lewis doubled their lead with a superb drive from 25 yards out.

Banw came out with every intention to reduce the deficit early in the second half and held the upper hand as their midfield began to take control and supply the ball to lively frontrunner Geraint Roberts.

Overall, however, his forays were competently dealt with by a resolute back division, with Lee Crumpler, Sam Middleton and Josh Ferreira in outstanding form for Borth.

To cap a tremendous team display, a slick move from defence allowed Gwion Pugh-Jones to feed the ball out wide to Ryan Davies, who cut in and chipped the ball over the Banw keeper for a 3-0 lead.

Banw hit the crossbar in the latter stages, but Borth held out for a resounding victory.

Elsewhere in division two, it was a fine start to the season for Newbridge as goals from Aeron Powell and Ollie Woods, with a brace, earned them a 3-1 win over Preseteigne, whilst Llansantffraid won 2-1 away at Churchstoke.
