MARED Griffiths continued her remarkable scoring form for Manchester United Women as the Welsh forward netted twice in a 5-3 Subway Players Cup victory over Liverpool on Wednesday night (21 October).
The 19-year-old from Traawsfynydd was the standout performer at the BrewDog Stadium, taking her tally to six goals for the season, with all of them coming in the competition. Her display also earned her the Player of the Match award in a supporters' vote.
United made a dominant start and went ahead through Lea Schuller before Griffiths took centre stage. Her first goal arrived shortly before the half-hour mark when a deflected effort wrong-footed Liverpool goalkeeper Khiara Keating and found the net.
Griffiths doubled her tally before the break, arriving at the far post to tap home after good work from Julia Zigiotti and Schuller. The goals helped United establish a commanding 3-0 half-time lead.
Monica Jusu Bah added a fourth after the interval with a superb solo effort, while captain Maya Le Tissier struck United's fifth. Liverpool mounted a late fightback through a Cornelia Kapocs hat-trick, but the visitors comfortably held on for victory.
The win made it six consecutive victories in all competitions for United and maintained their perfect start in the Subway Players Cup, with 20 goals scored in three matches.
Former Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor student Griffiths' latest brace further underlines her growing importance to the club and continues an impressive rise for the young forward. She has already represented Wales at senior international level and is regarded as one of the country's brightest prospects.
Having broken into the national team while still a teenager, Griffiths has become a regular feature in the Wales squad.
Her form for Manchester United will be another boost for Wales as they continue as the prepare to take on Norway in a two-legged World Cup play-off final in December.
