Llanidloes Town boss Hugh Clarke reflected on ‘a big three points’ after his side kept alive hopes of lifting the MMP Mid Wales division one title with a battling 2-1 win at Aberaeron.
It could hardly be much closer at the top with Llani and Llanfair United now sharing the summit after the Easter games, with Llanfair holding pole position with a superior goal difference.
After Berriew suffered 1-0 defeat at Builth Wells in their last fixture, it’s now a two-horse race as the Daffs prepare to visit Tywyn Bryncrug and Llanfair United head to Kerry in the final games.
Llani manager Hugh Clarke says all his side can do is to win at Tywyn and hope rivals Llanfair slip up after staying in the hunt with their battling 2-1 win at Aberaeron on Good Friday.
Goals from captain Matthew Savage and Gareth Owen secured the win, but the visitors - who had Dewi Allen sent off for two bookings late on - also needed a penalty save from Kris Williams.
“It was not a great performance, but we came away with the three points which we had to,” said Clarke.
“We did not start well, we looked a bit nervous and went a goal behind, but came into the game and created good chances. In the last 10 minutes they threw the kitchen sink at us, but we showed character and put bodies on the line, it was a great result for us.
“We can’t affect results elsewhere, we just have to concentrate on ourselves. The title goes down to the last weekend, and we have to make sure we win at Tywyn and see where it leaves us.”
Ifan Burrell put Aberaeron ahead, but Llani could have been trailing further after Drew Reynolds was ruled to have handled in the box, but the resulting penalty was well saved by Williams, who also then kept out the rebound.
From almost going two goals down, Llani levelled when Savage headed in at the back post after Owen’s long throw was flicked on by Josh Hartrick.
Aberaeron had a goal disallowed for offside, but then Llani struck moments later when Owen bundled the ball in from a corner for a 2-1 interval lead.
Savage had a header saved in the first period, and after the break George Clarke fired wide when through on goal and Connor Bird forced save.
The Daffs went down to 10 men after Allen was sent off for his second booking, but dug deep to see out nine minutes of injury time to clinch the win.
It’s advantage Llanfair, however, who, after their comfortable 4-0 win at Carno on Easter Monday, know that victory this weekend should see them crowned as the league champions.
Paul Griffiths’ in-swinging free kick opened the scoring after just five minutes, and when Karl Seliaerts was fouled on the edge of the area he stepped up to convert the penalty.
A great ball down the line by Tom Gregory then found Josh Astley, who beat the defender, cut inside and fired into the top corner with a great strike from 25 yards out for 3-0.
The points were secured before the interval when the Carno keeper spilled a long range effort by Paul Griffiths, and Alun Hughes converted the rebound.
On Saturday, Llanfair United and Berriew had shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Mount Field.
Nathan Edgington gave the hosts the lead, only for former United player Rhys Stephens to volley Berriew level. The Rhiewsiders were reduced to 10 men with the dismissal of Bailee Austin, but held out to claim a point.
Berriew’s title hopes ended on Monday when they went down 1-0 at Builth Wells, whose Sam Williams scored a free-kick in second half injury-time, after keeper Archie Jones was sent-off.
Bow Street meanwhile notched a solid 3-1 win in their last away game of the season as goals by Tom Williams, Garmon Nutting and Rhydian ap Owen sealed the points at Churchstoke.
