ABERAERON are through to the first round proper of the Welsh Cup after goals from Mattie Davies and Michael Gornall earned them a battling 2-1 win over visitors Montgomery Town last weekend.

With a few players away on other commitments, it meant a few changes in personnel for the hosts, with Thomas Jones making a full home debut.

The first half was dominated by Aberaeron, but Montgomery held on and with the last kick of the first half action they opened the scoring with a 20 yard free kick from Tyler McCarthy, which found it way into the net off the post.

Aberaeron created more chances after the break, with Thomas Jones beginning to terrorise the visiting right back, and James Hemmings and Dan James winning the midfield battle.

They finally got their reward when a weaving run and a powerful shot by Jones was saved by the goalkeeper, but the ball rebounded to the predatory Mattie Davies to coolly slot home.

Further home chances were created at will, but the score remained at 1-1 as the clock ticked towards extra time.

They eventually snatched a late winner, however, when substitute Mikey Gornall broke forward and he rounded the keeper to fire the ball high into the net from an acute angle, to ensure their progress into the next round.

Borth United were meanwhile left to rue two missed penalties as they were beaten 3-1 by Welshpool Town, with Will Pritchard scoring a hat-trick.

Pritchard took the lead took the lead against the run of play, but the home team didn’t drop their heads and continued to pressurise the away team.

Welshpool, however, doubled their lead on 36 minutes when a mix up between Sean Gates and Lee Crumpler let in Pritchard for his second goal.

Again Borth rallied and a through ball from Gwion Pugh-Jones put Liam Lewis in on goal, but he was bought down for a penalty, resulting in a yellow card for the visiting keeper. His spot kick, however, was well saved.

On 42 minutes, however, Borth finally got their rewards when Ben Byrne rose headed home from a corner.

Borth continued to take the game to the division one side in the second half and Byrne twice headed wide, and Lee Crumpler also rose well from a free kick, but he also headed over.

With time running out manager Ian Lewis bought on a new signing Osain Thomas and Tony Mainwaring, and they both made an immediate impact.

With just eight minutes remaining, Liam Lewis was again bought down for another penalty by the Welshpool keeper - who was fortunate not to be shown a second yellow card - but Ben Byrne saw his spot kick well saved.

The Crows were further punished in the last minute of injury time when Prtichard broke away to complete his hat-trick, and ensure a flattering final scoreline for the division one side.

A hat-trick from Rhys D Evans led the way as Llanidloes Town clinched their place in the first round proper of the Welsh Cup with an exciting 4-2 win over Berriew at Victoria Avenue.

The Daffs never looked back after taking the lead on 27 minutes when Evans met a cross from Matthew Savage to convert with a fine header.

Another terrific header from George Clarke from an Ed Clarke delivery doubled the lead, and then Evans added his second goal with a neat turn and strike after a flowing move.

Another excellent finish saw the front runner complete his hat-trick moments later, and George Clarke found the net with a smart header.

Berriew pulled back a couple of late replies through Richard Davies, from the penalty spot, and Ross Harris, but Llani marched on into round two.

Carno also marched on into the first round of the Welsh Cup when they beat Knighton Town 3-0 at Ty Brith.

Toby Evans fired the Greens ahead inside two minutes when collecting the ball off Ben Jones, running 30 yards into the area and finishing well into the bottom corner of the net.

Knighton looked to hit back immediately as they hit the bar and Kris Williams made a good save to allow Andrew Evans to clear off the line.

Jordan Jones, however, swept home Carno’s second of the game after being played in by Ashley Owen and they went in at half time two goals up.

The second half saw Knighton hit the bar again early on, but Peter Rees then scored his 10th goal of the season after being teed up by Toby Evans for an unassailable 3-0 lead on the hour.

Hay St Mary’s are out of Cup after a 2-1 home defeat to Llanrhaeadr.

The Saints went ahead when Brendan Hackett crossed for Jack Biggs to place his header past the keeper, but a good move then saw Iwan Matthews head in the equaliser, and five minutes into the second half an excellent move saw Iain Edmunds volley them in front.

Bow Street meanwhile bowed out of the competition with a 2-0 defeat at home to Brecon Corries as goals from Paul Keddle and Lee Brooks proved enough for the visitors to progress.

Rhayader Town marched on with a 6-2 win over Machynlleth, courtesy of goals from Matt Lewis, Mark Davies, Dane Griffiths, Jonny Jones, Gareth Hughes and Tom Bethell, with a penalty. Harry Holt scored two replies.

Two goals from Gwydion Ifan and further goals from Sam Evans, Dan Dascalu, Riki Rowlands and Prys Jones sentenced Abermule to a disappointing 6-1 defeat to Llanuwchllyn.
